Cake a Diem by F.S. Faqir **ARC REVIEW**

Do you know how that last piece of chocolate cake always looks so tempting and irresistible, with its thick chocolate frosting, layered sponge...

Well, that right there is what Jake Richards is to me.

We met in a bar; it was conventional until my eyes locked onto his and I knew at that moment that this could be the beginning of the end for me.

I'm trying to start a clean slate away from my life in small towns, by hitting the city. However, escaping to bury away two years of my life, there's only one problem in my way. Jake.

Avoiding him turns out to be more complicated than I thought. With the perusal of opening my bakery, we only get brought closer together, under circumstances that even I cannot change.

Now, I can't help asking myself, can I resist him when he looks like freaking Clark Kent, with his rolled-up sleeves, black framed glasses and a smile that makes me melt every time?

Can I have my cake and eat it without giving too much away?

Carpe Diem, right?

Or should I say Cake a Diem?

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Zoe is starting a new chapter in her life when she moves to London with her best friend and plans to start a business and open a bakery. She is in a bad placeemotionally and financially, so when she meets Jake, a modern Clark Kent, she's torn, since she doesn't feel ready and in a position to get to know him.

Jake has a lot of baggage and he's not sure if Zoe will be able to take up on him, since she also seems to deal with her own demons. He's a patient man though and like Superman, he's on a mission to wait for her and give her space. The circumstances though, seem to want to unite them.

"I can't help but feel that he's saying he's closing the chapter on us. I can't blame him because when I only meant to put a bookmark on us, I ended up tearing the pages."

That was a really nice debut novel and really cute if I may say so. It was a light read and I enjoyed the characters , even though Zoe wasn't always my favorite. She pissed me off quite freuently with her on and off non decisive behavior, her mood swings and generally the fact that she would say something and right away she would say or do the exact opposite. That was a bit irritating in my opinion. Jake was definitely more likeable, along with the secondary characters, which were their best friends. It would be interesting to see them together in the future maybe.

There was a bit of angst , but somehow it felt forced and slightly predictable. I don't know if it was because of my reading slump and my mood to stay away from reading, but I kind of struggled getting invested in the story and it seemed to drug me for long. But that's probably me and not the book's fault. I think it was a good first writing effort and I can't wait to see more in the future by this author - hopefully with a more likeable heroine :)
